From my experience at University with mixing with people from lots of different backgrounds. From being a working-class family coming into university, I’ve had a very different experience from many people that I know, from having no option but to work part-time to afford rent and basic living necessities.

Even though I’ve had an amazing time, sometimes working to afford to live here has overconsumed my studies. I know I’m not the only person who has experienced this, and I’ve never really seen a project stemming from this quite difficult yet very real experience. It’s generally a very hard time for everyone financially in this current political climate, and one thing I’ve noticed a lot is that not many people speak to the younger generation about the financial issues we have and how to get out of them. From being taken advantage of by student landlords to having to agree to zero-hour contracts to have flexibility for studies, it’s a very hard time to be a young person at the moment.

“The Invisible Weight” consists of me using play to express myself and my experience photographically. Exploring themes around poor student housing, cost of travel, food costs, and zero-hour contracts.
